Sorting Day!

Riya is organising the classroom library! 📚

"This shelf has 37 books and that one has 45 books."

Milo tilts his head. "Which shelf has more books? How do you know?"

Riya smiles. "I don't guess — I compare the tens first!"

🧠
Quick Recall!
Every number has tens and ones

Before we compare, let's break down two numbers into tens and ones.

37
3 tens + 7 ones
vs
45
4 tens + 5 ones

💡 Remember: The tens digit tells us how many groups of 10. The ones digit tells us the leftover singles!

Compare by Tens First!

Look at the TENS
Compare 4 tens vs 6 tens
2
Which has more tens?
6 tens is more than 4 tens
3
Decision Made!
62 is greater than 45

💡 When tens are different, we don't even need to look at the ones! The tens decide everything.

1️⃣
When Tens Are Equal...
Then check the ones!
🤔
Same tens? Now compare the ones!

Tens are equal (3 = 3), so we compare ones: 4 vs 7

💡 Common mistake: Don't skip to ones without checking tens first!
